State of Emergency and Transportation Waiver – Helene

Dear Commodity Leader,

The Governor has declared a State of Emergency in advance of Hurricane/Tropical Storm Helene’s arrival in North Carolina. At my recommendation, he has also directed the Department of Public Safety and the Department of Transportation to suspend weighing vehicles used to transport livestock, poultry, or crops ready to be harvested and feed for livestock and poultry in the emergency area. The order also waives the maximum hours of service allowed for drivers.

In addition to the waiving of motor vehicle regulations, the department is temporarily suspending health certificate requirements on livestock traveling through the state from areas in Helene’s path.

The Executive Order and the Department’s Partial Suspension of Interstate Movement is attached here. I would encourage farmers to print out a copy of the Executive Order to keep in their trucks to be able to show law enforcement officials.

While we know that storms can be unpredictable, and forecasts can change, we are actively monitoring the situation and expect areas in North Carolina to receive high amounts of rain throughout this weekend. Our Emergency Programs Division, and others in the Department, will continue to stay on top of all the latest information and we will make sure you are all aware of any pertinent updates.

Please do not hesitate to contact us about any specific issues you or your members encounter or any updates you are receiving about any damages. We stand ready to assist our farmers and agricultural community as best we can.

I’m praying you and yours stay safe in this impending storm and that any agricultural damage is minimal.
