Want to learn more about the Equine State Trail? Everyone is welcome to listen to a special presentation on the trail during the NC Horse Council May 7, 2025, Board meeting. In 2023, the General Assembly, at the request of the North Carolina Horse Council, authorized the Department of Natural and Cultural Resources to add the Equine State Trail to the State Parks System. This will be the only State Trail designated exclusively for equine use and hiking. Kat Deutsch, State Trails Planner with the Division of Parks and Recreation, and Barb Oslund, trails consultant with the NC Horse Council, will present information and answer questions.
To attend the meeting check the NC Horse Council website for details as the date approaches.
Note: The initial master planning process is underway and will identify a five-to-ten-mile-wide corridor for the Equine State Trail, outline opportunities and constraints, define segments within the corridor, and gather input from the public and stakeholders. We’re especially looking for equine trail advocates in Chatham, Cumberland, Lee, Harnett, Hoke, Montgomery, Moore, and Richmond counties, where the trail is proposed. We need people in those counties to engage other trail riders, County leaders, and staff to support the trail designation effort.
